  • The Bedford Estates signs Italian restaurant Macellaio RC for iconic Store Street site
  • The 1,447 sq ft with a 581 sq ft forecourt has been taken on a 15-year lease
  • Adds to the focus on attracting a quality mix of independent retail and dining to Bloomsbury

Macellaio RC, a growing family of five Italian restaurants, has chosen Bloomsbury’s Store Street for the site of their sixth venue. Celebrated both here in London and in Milan for their Fassona steak which is sourced from the mountain valleys north of Genoa, Macellaio RC will open at 6 Store Street this autumn. Diners are promised ‘incredible Italian food, sourced with respect, prepared with love and expertly cooked’.

Once the Duke of Bedford’s filling station, the iconic 1,447 sq ft site with a 581 sq ft forecourt and its distinctive mural has been secured on a 15-year lease. Store Street is a neighbourhood-style road featuring independent retailers and restaurants. It is adjacent to Tottenham Court Road whose enlarged tube station will include the Elizabeth Line (Crossrail) from late 2018.

Roberto Costa, founder and owner of Macellaio RC , said: “I fell in love with this venue and the Bloomsbury area at first sight. For me it’s an honour to be able to raise the curtain of our theatre in such a historical venue. As Italian artisans, we love the history behind this incredible building, one of the biggest petrol station in the 1920’s, and we want to show it respect so it gives us the right motivation to do our very best.”

The Bedford Estates has been responsible for the development and subsequent management of much of Bloomsbury since 1669. Encompassing London’s Knowledge Quarter the area boasts the British Museum, University of London, Birkbeck and University College London. The University of London is the largest physical university, by number of full-time students, in the United Kingdom. The British Museum has over six million visitors each year, making it the top tourist attraction in London.

As a result, Store Street is a popular destination with strong footfall and a diverse tenant mix. Other food and beverage choices include Store Street Espresso coffee shop, which has opened another two stores elsewhere following success on the street, The Life Goddess, Olivelli’s and KOOX UK’s first take- away restaurant created in partnership with 3* Michelin chefs.

Retailers include Cloud 9 Cycles, an independent boutique bike shop specialising in custom-built bicycles, Foote’s music, established in the 1920s selling bespoke musical instruments, Treadwell’s Books, an indie bookstore that specialises in world religion, spirituality and paganism, and Orchydia, the UK’s only dedicated orchid florist.

Simon Elmer, Steward of the London Estate, said: “Our focus is on attracting a quality mix of independent retail and dining to Bloomsbury. This part of London is renowned for its rich history, elegant period buildings and attractive garden squares. New additions, such as Macellaio RC, ensure we enhance the area as a place to live in, work in and visit.”

About Macellaio RC:

Founded by Roberto Costa, there are now four Macellaio RC restaurants across London, with a further site in Milan, all of which focus on using the best Italian produce, cooked simply to allow the natural flavours to shine through. Macellaio translates as ‘butcher’, and all sites uniquely combine restaurant and butcher, with the Fassona beef for which they are renowned dry-aged, proudly displayed and prepared in front of guests. This aging process is key to the ethos of the restaurants, as Roberto strongly believes that the process of maturation develops the authentic Italian flavour of his dishes. The flagship Macellaio RC opened in South Kensington in October 2012, followed by Exmouth Market in August 2015, Union Street in November 2016, Northcote Road in July 2017, and Macellaio RC Milan in May 2018.
