Sauce Loves…Longueville Manor, Jersey

Longueville Pool

Just a few miles north of France, and a few more from the south coast of the UK – amid a cluster of islands and archipelagos – lies Jersey and Longueville Manor. A beautiful old manor house converted into one of Jersey’s most highly acclaimed hotels, Longueville is an oasis of calm on an already relaxed island. A few weeks ago, Sauce Travel was lucky enough to make a speedy trip over to Jersey to visit our gorgeous client.

Welcomed by friendly resident pooch Monty, we were instantly whisked around the hotel, followed by the grounds having donned wellies from the guest rack by the backdoor. With 30 charming bedrooms, Longueville sits in an 18 acre estate which includes a beautiful pond, jaw-droppingly neat kitchen garden (that feeds all salad served in the restaurant), outdoor swimming pool and tennis court. Monty was narrowly averted from diving into the pond after a duck.

Meals at Longueville, served in the beautiful 15th century Oak Room, centre on seriously fresh local produce – particularly anything fishy. This goes so far that local celebrity chef Andrew Baird even hand dives his own scallops, scuba dives for turbot, forages for clams, and catches his own lobster all to feed Longueville’s guests. Lunch was a treat of seafood sandwiches (infinitely better than the Pret standard we are used to back in Shepherd’s Bush!), while supper was a feast of local deep water crabs, Andrew’s favourite hand dived scallops (various times and ways!), line caught sea bass and sole all paired with the famous Jersey Royal. And this was before the most impressive course of all; if you’re partial to cheese, make sure you save space for the cheese trolley which offers no less than 30 different cheeses at any one time. Finally, it would be a real shame to miss breakfast – the epic spread even includes Spanish jamon that guests cut themselves and Portuguese pasteis de nata.

Our top treat of the flying visit however was our trip down to the St Helier marina for our introduction to Fizz Too, the hotel’s luxury private yacht. As sod’s law would have it, no sooner had we left the hotel then the heavens opened – our seasonal British weather also affects the Channel Islands. However, we weren’t to be beaten by the weather so armed with champagne we found a comfortable seat on the yacht to enjoy the harbour views. An absolute treat.

Having left the calming serenity of Longueville, our trip then took a turn for the worse – all planes cancelled from Jersey – so we ended up getting the ferry home. For two serious foodies, our favourite part was the ferry canteen lunch!

Thank you so much Longueville for having us to stay and showing us around true island life, we are Jersey converts!
