Rex De Guzman

A British-born Filipino, Rex De Guzman was brought up in South East London. After finishing secondary school, Rex was torn between music or food as a career and opted for an NVQ Catering course where his true calling for the food industry developed for 3 years at Shooters Hill Sixth Form College. Rex graduated with NVQ Level 3 catering (2011) and headed straight into his first role as a Commis chef in Chapters: All Day dining, eventually moving on to work at ‘The Factory House’ (2013) and then progressing into his first Chef de Partie role at ‘The Rivington Bar & Grill’ in Old Street (2014). Completing a Ski Season as a Private chalet chef for ‘Fish & Pips’ (2016/17) and cooking briefly at ‘The Elephant’ popup restaurant in John Lewis Roof Gardens under Michelin Starred Chef, Simon Hulstone (2017) are just a couple more notable names that Rex has worked for.

Despite having a passion for food and cooking, Rex quickly realised that working for someone else for the rest of his life was not for him. In 2014, he decided to start a new journey
specialising in Filipino food and build a reputation for himself whilst working. At the age of 21, Rex ran his first pop-up restaurant which marked the beginning of his ambition and mission to pioneer and popularise Filipino cuisine in the United Kingdom.

In 2018, Rex left his role as chef de partie in Gordon Ramsay’s ‘Maze’ restaurant in Mayfair (now ‘Lucky Cat’) to start his own Filipino BBQ & Street food business called ‘TURO TURO’ and is now, at present, running as a popup restaurant in various locations of London. In 2019, Rex competed in the ‘British Street Food Awards’ under ‘TURO TURO,’ winning the title of “Southern Champion” and then participating in the National Finals to win the title of “Best Vegetarian Dish” in the UK.

In 2022, Rex competed in the first season of Channel 4’s: “The Great Cookbook Challenge with Jamie Oliver” and progressed to the grand finals of the cooking show.

Rex’s other endeavours include consulting for food startups, as well as creating content on business and Filipino cuisine. Rex enjoys eating out, spending time with friends and family,
listening to a variety of music, travelling, trying new experiences, and even a little video gaming in his spare time.
