Sauce Reviews: The Wolseley

Formerly a prestigious car showroom and Bank, The Wolseley café-restaurant opened its doors in November 2003, when Chris Corbin and Jeremy King acquired the space, transforming its Venetian-inspired interiors into, what is now, a, if not ‘the’ London institution for all day dining.

With such history, we decided to see what all the fuss was about, and find out if the food really does live up to all the hype…

Upon entering the room, we were whisked back to the 20’s and all its grandeur. Its towering pillars, arches, and balcony allow diners to escape the bustling London streets, creating their own intimate dining experiences. Tall ceilings and large windows make the room feel spacious and light.

The Wolseley has a relaxed, luxurious atmosphere, making it popular amongst celebs, tourists and city goers alike. Actor Bill Nighy looked very comfortable having breakfast without any fuss or attention, on our visit.

Dubbed the most important meal of the day, we thought it only right to visit for breakfast. Sitting down at our table we were offered a choice of freshly squeezed juice. Both pineapple and apple juices were fresh and thirst quenching. So often, a good coffee is hard to come by, but you’d expect only the best from the Wolseley. And that it was. Intense and creamy our cappuccinos went down too easily.

With a busy day ahead (or simply due to the size of our rather healthy appetites), we diverted the granola and fruits, heading straight for the cooked options, displayed clearly on the beautifully branded Wolseley menu booklets:

A few minutes of scanning and we had decided on the Potato Rosti with ‘worcestershire tomatoes’, grilled field mushrooms and a fried egg (8.50):

Crispy grated potato, topped with a generously sized tomato, mushroom and runny egg, seemed the perfect choice.

… and ‘The English’ a cooked-breakfast lovers delight, with a choice of Fried, Poached or Scrambled Eggs with Bacon, Sausage, Baked Beans, Tomato, Black Pudding and Mushroom – all for a very reasonable 15.25. We tucked in to both without a sniff.

Both dishes contained only the best quality ingredients, all brought together lovingly on a plate by Head Chef Lawrence Keogh and his brigade.

Our visit had confirmed the rumours; The Wolseley is a must-visit. Do we need an excuse for afternoon tea and dinner?
