Yen: Japanese fine-dining restaurant on The Strand

Yen

Parisian Soba noodle specialists Yen launched their London flagship restaurant on The Strand in November 2017 to much critical acclaim. Since its opening, the restaurant has become synonymous with eating elegant, high-end Japanese cuisine in the capital, including London’s first handmade Soba from master chefs.

Head Chef Hirkoki Hiyama came to Yen following an impressive career working in multiple Michelin-starred restaurants, including Ristorante Da Vittorio in Italy. Kasuki Sakurai, Yen’s director of Soba, was trained by “Master of Soba” Mr Takahashi Kunihiro in Yamanashi, Japan. Head sushi chef Akinori Yasuda also boasts an impressive CV, with over 20 years’ experience crafting sushi, including a 6-year stint at Zuma.

The menu at Yen showcases perfectly-executed Japanese dishes with an emphasis on using the highest quality ingredients and freshest fish alongside handmade Soba, which are prepared twice a day in the restaurant’s dedicated soba room.

Guests can choose from an extensive à la carte menu (including sushi, tempura, sashimi and robata grilled meats and fish), or a daily changing omakase menu chosen by the chefs. Starters include Hida wagyu tartar and chawan mushi with foie gras and scallop, as well as Yen’s signature home-made tofu and wakame salad. Mains include Chargrilled black cod marinated in Saikyo miso, and Slow-cooked duck breast. Soba noodles can be enjoyed hot or cold in broth, with an option to include toppings such as scallops and roasted duck.

Yen’s drinks offering complements the menu; the restaurant’s drinks list includes a variety of wines by the glass and by the bottle, selection of imaginatively created cocktails, as well an extensive list of hot and cold sakes and varieties of shochu, the ‘spirit of Japan’, imported specially by Yen. Drinks can also be enjoyed in Yen’s beautiful mezzanine bar, which includes an outdoor terrace for the summer months.

The restaurant, designed by Sybarite Architects, is a bright and airy space – combining traditional Japanese opulence and minimalism simultaneously. With an open-plan kitchen and sushi counter two main focal points, the restaurant also includes London’s only glass-front Soba room.
